The Rhône Valley

The Rhône river designs on its banks a variety of landscapes from Vienne to Avignon through Provence and the Luberon. Extending over six french Departments, the Rhône Valley shapes a corridor between Northern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. As the second French wine growing region, it is separated into the hilly Septentrional vineyards and the flat Meridional ones. This explains a wide range of landscapes, due to four geological variations :  granite, sandy silica, limestone and clay.

The Rhône Wines AOCs and grape varieties

The Rhône Valley is made out of various AOCs :

  • Côtes du Rhône, the generic one
  • Côtes du Rhône Villages, made out of 22 appellations
  • Crus des Côtes du Rhône, e.g. Crozes Hermitages, Gigondas, Vacqueyras
  • Vallée du Rhône, e.g. Costières de Nîmes, Luberon, Ventoux
  • Sweet Wines, i.e. Muscat Beaumes de Venise, Rasteau

Although most of the wines are Reds, you may explore here the three wine colors. In the North robust but sophisticated reds and aromatic whites. In the South full bodied Reds, crispy Whites and fruity Rosés. Whereas the dominant red varietals are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, the White ones are Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache blanc and Bourboulenc.

Provence in the South of France is considered as the most beautiful place in France, and it stretches all the way from Arles and Avignon to Monaco, anchored by the Mediterranean sea. The region’s natural beauty, its warm climate, picturesque Medieval villages, traditional open markets, colors, aromas, olive oil, sun flowers, lavender fields and of course its wines make Provence an irresistible destination to both the French and to visitors.

What gives Provence its distinctive character and unique wines is, among other things, its particularly diverse landscape swept by the Mistral wind and its warm dry and sunny weather. Provence is more and more popular and recognized for its wines, especially about its rosé wines (some of the World’s best rosés) but it also produces some remarkable strong and full-bodied red wines which can age several years in barrels, as well as tender delicate and airy whites.
If you want to discover the wines and the beauty of Provence countryside in a relaxing, welcoming atmosphere with an English-speaking guide, then our private Provence wine tours are for you!
We offer several destinations to visit and taste wine in Provence such as Aix en Provence, LuberonBaux de ProvenceBandol & Cassis and the world famous Châteauneuf du Pape.

Although wine making here dates from the romans, the AOC is quite young, since it is only 21 years old. This is a small appellation made of only 12 wineries. The majority of the production here is organic and manually harvested.
