Avignon the City of Popes
Built on the banks of the Rhône, Avignon was the former Capital of the Christian empire in the early 14 C. The ramparts encircle the entire old city. It has a huge architectural background, much of which is part of UNESCO World Heritage: enter and explore this amazing open-air book of History.
Walk the cobbled streets and discover the Palace of the Popes, the Pont d’Avignon, the Petit Palais museum and the Cathedral des Doms. The town hosts every summer in July the most famous Theater Festival of the world. Any actor worthy of the name should have assisted this event once in its lifetime!
Châteauneuf du Pape, the Southern Wine Mecca
Nestled between Avignon and Orange, the village of Châteauneuf du Pape is dedicated to its wine, precursor of the French AOC system. Under the reign of John XXII, it has been chosen to be the summer residence of the Popes. In the heart of the village, you may taste at the Vignobles Mayard tasting cellar some of the appellation superstars.
L’Isle sur la Sorgue, an Arty Hangout
L’Isle sur La Sorgue is known as the Little Venice of Provence. Once a small fishing village in the middle of the marshlands, the place then became the heart of Provence textile industry. The many water wheels that still turn today still reminds us of this glorious past. Nowadays L’Isle is famous for its art galleries and antique dealers. What a privilege to stroll around the canals, listening to the cicadas chirping! That is a true Provençal “art de vivre”…
